Shedding light on BBL therapy

BBL stands for “broadband light.” This treatment, courtesy of medical device leader SCITON®, harnesses a special type of light technology called “intense pulsed light” (or IPL). Also known as “phototherapy,” IPL/BBL technologies may be applied to highly targeted parts of the face, neck, chest, arms, legs, back, and other parts of the body. You may want to “target” these areas due to cosmetic concerns or changes, such as the development or worsening of brown spots and red discoloration.

Correct. Brighten. Rejuvenate. See how BBL™ light therapy restores radiant, youthful skin with real patient results.

The light delivers photothermal energy. The light energy is absorbed by the pigment-producing melanin and hemoglobin associated with red spots. In addition, this therapeutic process triggers the production of fresh collagen and elastin, which are responsible for the skin’s firmness and elasticity, respectively. So, BBL™ treatment can have a skin tightening effect and smooth lined or wrinkled areas. These changes can occur due to the natural loss of collagen, elastin, and other structural components of the skin with time.

Sciton - BBL BroadBand Light

Over time, most people develop some skin condition associated with aging, an active lifestyle, or simply too much time in the sun. Age spots, freckles, redness, and flushing are all natural outcomes that many people would like to reverse in order to restore a younger, fresher look.

I’m 48 years old, and I had been one of those of my generation who poured baby oil on myself and laid in the sun for hours and hours. So I had quite a bit of sun damage—age spots, wrinkling. I don’t know if you could see this very much, but the sides and the front of my neck were literally covered with dark brown spots, almost blending into my skin. It looked old and crepey—really very unflattering.

For people like Janet and Ann, BBL, short for broadband light, is an innovative approach to the treatment of skin conditions associated with aging and sun damage. The BBL system from Sciton allows your physician to precisely treat age and sun spots, small facial veins, acne, flushing, blushing, rosacea, and several other types of skin blemishes.

Using appropriate wavelengths and adapters, your physician can tailor your treatment to match your skin’s condition and desired results. And since wavelengths and adapters can be changed on the fly, your physician can actually treat more than one condition in a single treatment session.

I had my whole face done, and I have done my neck and chest. I had a huge amount of sun damage on my chest, and it really evened it out—made it a lot smoother, with much more skin clarity—a total smoothing of my skin. I was amazed. He would be working hard and say, “Well, this is going to smooth your skin too,” and I’d think, “Yeah, right.” I couldn’t believe it when I saw that it really did.

The light energy delivered by the BBL system gently heats the upper layers of your skin. The heat absorbed stimulates your skin cells to generate new collagen. In addition, the photothermal energy targets and eliminates many of the fine vessels that cause redness and the unwanted melanin responsible for pigmented lesions. Together, these help restore your skin’s natural beauty, blending its natural colors and making it smoother, more vibrant, and younger-looking.

The BBL procedure is gentle, non-invasive, safe, and reasonably comfortable. I don’t find it painful—it’s a little bit like having a rubber band snapped on you, but it’s not painful. There might be a slight bit of discomfort, more from the surprise of the flash of light than actual pain or discomfort.

BBL is a minimal-downtime procedure. In most cases, you’ll be able to apply makeup, return to work, and resume most normal activities right away. It’s not something that makes you so unsightly that you can’t go out. I go out in public the next day.

The BBL system can be used on any area of the body. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight, such as the face, neck, back of the hands, chest, and shoulders. Generally, two to five treatments at three- to four-week intervals will produce the desired results. Your healthcare provider will help you determine the right number of treatments and the optimal interval between treatments.

The reaction is, “Gosh, your skin looks good! What are you doing?” or “What product are you using? What have you had done?” It’s one of these things—it’s a non-invasive way to help your skin look the best it can. There’s no scarring, no real downtime, and no reason that you shouldn’t do it if you want your skin to look as good as it can.

In addition to skin conditions associated with aging and sun damage, your healthcare provider’s BBL system can also help reduce unwanted hair. It’s fast, it’s easy, and it’s virtually pain-free.

BBL—a light like no other.

A single system for the widest range of skin conditions. Fast, effective, with little or no discomfort and no downtime—giving your healthcare provider the power to provide you with a smoother, more vibrant, and more youthful appearance.

That’s BBL from Sciton.

What to expect

If Dr. Jehangir finds that you are a good candidate for BBL™ treatment, she will walk you through everything to expect and ways to ensure your utmost comfort beforehand. Generally, the handpiece or applicator is equipped with built-in cooling. So, treatment is usually tolerated perfectly fine by most patients but we do offer a numbing anesthetic. The technology’s cooling feature also helps to support continued comfort throughout the treatment session while allowing light to penetrate the targeted tissues safely. As a light-assisted therapy, you will also be provided with safety goggles or dark glasses to protect your eyes. How and where the handpiece is passed or applied to your skin depends on specific factors, such as the nature and severity of your concerns.

In addition to the hyperpigmentation mentioned above and laxity, the BBL™ system may provide a safe, gentle, and no-downtime treatment for individuals with:

  • Rosacea
  • Uneven or dry skin texture
  • Active acne
  • Deep lesions on darker complexions
  • Vascular lesions (like cherry angiomas)

The treated area may feel warm for about 30 to 60 minutes afterward. You may experience some redness, swelling, and sensitivity. But that is typically minor and temporary. We will review proper sun protection and other after-care measures to manage these effects. Some patients notice more vibrant, healthier-looking skin in around a week. As the collagen remodeling process is stimulated, your skin will continue to look better over time. It only requires one treatment to achieve your desired results. However, the total number of treatment sessions depends on factors such as your skin type and tone, the number of areas and types of conditions to treat, and the respective sizes of those treatment areas.
