In the past, options for many patients for lasting professional hair removal traditionally involved electrolysis. However, older lasers were not appropriate for all skin types and hair types, and patients had concerns over discomfort and the length of time it takes for the method to be effective.  At Alchemy Wellness, Dr. Saima Jehangir uses the newest and most advanced technologies, including the Vectus^® laser by Cynosure Lutronic. Why has my hair and skin color mattered so much regarding laser treatment?

Older, conventional laser systems generally seek out the melanin or pigment in the hair. They have difficulty distinguishing between the color of melanin in the skin and the color/pigment in the hair. It has led to a risk of the laser detecting the skin and not the hair. This can result in damage to the skin (such as hyperpigmentation and even burns). For this reason, lasers were often best to treat individuals with a contrast between the color of their skin and the color of their hair, such as those with dark and light skin. Laser technology has not previously been indicated for treating light hair and more melanated skin tones.

What makes the Vectus^® system different?

This advanced laser can distinguish between the pigment in the hair and the pigment in the skin. In effect, it targets the hairs properly and safely. The surrounding skin remains intact and untouched, and is not vulnerable to the risks associated with lasers in the past. Since treatment is so precise, targeting and destroying follicles uniformly, repetitive treatment of any area is not necessary. Because of the cyclical nature of hair growth, you may need several treatment sessions to achieve the desired results. However, each treatment session is far shorter and more efficient than treatments with older lasers.
